EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT! Today’s news is coming hot from the press, blogs, Instagram and so much more. The ways in which we can obtain news are extensive, but before we get into how to obtain the news, we must understand what news is. I define news as being events or information that are most current and worthy of the coverage. For many years I thought that news only took place in a newsroom but the older I get the more I am seeing my view on news expand. When it comes to local news from my hometown our local television news channels are a good source of news for me.
When it comes to staying up on featuring news stories on a national level, social media plays a large part in that for me. Over the last decade or so people have no longer been able to turn a blind eye or hide the injustices against African Americans by police officers, due to cell phone and dash cam video recordings. Social media allows for people’s personal cell phone footage being made public once posted on their social media. Even here recently with the catastrophic weather in the Bahamas, people trapped or affected by the storm took to social media to get the news out that they needed prayers as they sought for shelter. This does not mean I don’t do my own further research into the stories that I see on social media, it is just that I find social media to be the quickest way to let me know about the events and then from there if I am truly interested I am able to further investigate.
In Little Rock, AR I know that people oddly enough still buy spaces on the radio to advertise their church events, concerts, and plays as a means of spreading the news. While at work I tend to listen to a wide range of podcasts through Spotify on culture, politics, fashion, and religion which also act as a source of news in my life. I know that we have all seen the tabloids that surround the check-out lanes at the grocery stores, that have celebrities plastered across the front with headlines like, “Is Oprah expecting? Check out pg. 16 to see!” Even though I am sure many celebrities would disagree these along with blogs are also considered news, even if they sometimes contain as the president calls it “fake news.” I consider it a privilege to have access to various types of news such as: politics, sports, celebrities, music, economics, etc. Because in various places throughout the world there are people who do not have the privileges due to their governmental systems. Much like this post news is all over the place and can be found in various forms, but it is up to you to make sure you are doing your research.
