A place of rest and relaxation has been
turned upside down by Hurricane Dorian. Some Bahamians took to social media to
give us their firsthand accounts of the devastation and requested for people to
pray. USA Today’s twitter account has been keeping me up on the aftermath of
the storms on those islands. September 1st through the 2nd
Hurricane Dorian tore its way through the Bahamas and Abaco Islands with maximum
force winds, rainfall, and excess floodwater. I spent the past day following the tweets released by USA Today on Hurricane Dorian.
The first tweet on the incident was on the reported denial of TPS (temporary protected status) to the people of the Bahamas. USA Today named CNN and NBC as the source of the information. After the earthquake in Haiti in 2010 TPS was granted to the Haitians, as well as in other occasions of natural disasters. Representative Karen Bass D-Calif, Congressional Black Caucus chairwoman, spoke on the matter displeased with hearing that the US will possibly not help support the families in need.

Originally when I saw the second tweet
with the tag labeled Hurricane Dorian, the link attached was about Elizabeth
Warren’s plan to increase Social Security benefits, I thought it odd but read
it none the less to further investigate. Moment later USA Today posted another
tweet taking for those who questioned their last tweet and they informed us that
they wrong link had been connected, then linked the correct one. The second
tweets image caught my eye immediately, it was two men carrying a dead body in
a white cloth through the rubbish. There are still 2,500 people missing, 15,000 people without food and shelter, and 50 dead and according the prime minister of the Bahamas the number is expected to "significantly increase". Thousands have had to travel to New
Province, where the authorities plan to put tent cities in place. Justin Timberlake
and Tiger Woods have created the One Bahamas Fund, in partnership with Royal
Bank of Canada, Nexus Luxury Collection, and members of the Bahamas resort
community to provide to relief to those affected by the storm. If you would
like to donate, please do you research on the various organizations and know that every little thing counts.
